A canopy is both decoration and direction.
While façades remain aligned with the
street, canopies project outward, performing identity
in public space. They give buildings character and
communicate what kind of experience awaits inside.
Situated on a street known for its Turkish
restaurants, the exhibition reflects on how ideas
of elsewhere are constructed through visual cues.
Through four canopies, colour, typography and
ornament become shorthand for place.
Mounted on the gallery wall, the canopies remain
suspended between architecture and image,
carrying the associations of the places from
which they emerged. They are defined not by their
capacity to shelter an entrance or a terrace, but by
their capacity to signify.
Egon Van Herreweghe relocates the visual language
of brands and products into the exhibition space. By
producing everyday objects and commissioning the
fabrication of his works, he questions authenticity,
value, and authorship.
